Awesomest Image(s) du Jour CI

Some cool pictures for a hot day:

These two images (and 31 others) were taken by Reuters photographer Lucas Jackson at the 2011 Applied Physics Laboratory Ice Station out on the polar ice, north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

When looking at the ice, you could be forgiven for thinking you were on terra firma...until a Seawolf class submarine surfaces next to you!

Awesomest Image du Jour C

Photograph or Painting?

Photograph, my friends...one incredible photograph.

Taken in a Namibian park by Frans Lanting for National Geographic, the stunning effect was made possible by a brief moment when the morning sun was illuminating sand dunes beyond while the desert floor was still in shadow.  See this image in its larger context -- as well as some other photos and the accompanying article -- here.

Depressingest Chart du Jour XCIX

You might have seen a version of this before, but here is the latest, updated version by The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities based on numbers from the Congressional Budget Office:

Nothing like cutting revenues, while increasing expenditures, while driving the economy off a financial cliff!

Who would have ever thought it possible!?

Awesomest Image du Jour XCVIII

President Barack O'Bama's Irish connection:

It may only be 1/32 of his ethnic make-up, but it's in there!

(This is why I love genealogy so much.)

Awesomest Image du Jour XCVII

Never say never.

As in, I never thought I would post a sports-related picture, but, honestly, this is too good.

Thanks NPR!

Questionablest Image du Jour XCVI

Check out the eye-popper currently plastered on the front page of Vogue's website:

[The picture won't last in this prominent place for long, of course, but here's the related article.]

Hey!  What's a little Serbian nationalism when you have a tennis star who looks good in a speedo and you have magazines to sell!?

Awesomest Image(s) du Jour XCV

It's a big deal.

A British monarch visiting the site of the Croke Park massacre -- a.k.a. "Bloody Sunday" -- would have been unthinkable up until the very recent past (and still is, no doubt, for some).  Click here to find out why.

[A Different] Awesomest Image du Jour XCIV

Whereas, it is certainly true that today's images of Endeavour's final launch are indeed awesomest-worthy, so is this collection of images from an earlier mode of transportation:

These two interior images are from the Luftschiff Hindenburg.  See the rest of the series by clicking here.

I found them while randomly browsing a website called How To Be A Retronaut -- a place I was directed to by a link on Boing Boing showcasing a collection of old-timey (and disappearing) New York City storefronts.  They're worth a peek, too.

P.S.  Get home safely, Endeavour.

Awesomest Image(s) du Jour XCII

Andrew Murray Howe V has an amazing collection of photos that his great-grandfather took while on a trip to Moscow in 1909...8 years before the Bolshevik revolution.  They document both the grand and the lowly and offer a glimpse of pre-Soviet Russia.

This is a cucumber street vendor:

And here are the upper classes at play:

Awesomest Surprising Fact du Jour XCI

Perhaps New York City should be re-coined:  NYSea.  Get a load of one of its off-shore residents:

It turns out that the waters off Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens (and the rest of Long Island) are teeming with whales.  Blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales, minke whales, sei whales and right whales...they're all out there.

Something to consider the next time you go for a dip at Coney Island, Jones Beach or out at The Pines....

Awesomest Image du Jour XC

Check it out folks...this is a rendering of the new building Northwestern's Bienen School of Music is eagerly anticipating moving into in a couple of years.

To be located on the lakefront next to Regenstein and Pick-Staiger, the right side of the building points south and will frame a view of downtown Chicago.  Neat!

Click here to learn more at the music school's website.

Ground-breaking is currently scheduled for this Spring-Summer.

Awesomest Image du Jour LXXXIX

If it's not already an iconic image, it will be.

I remember being so struck by it when it was first published; but, whatever the instant, reflexive analysis I surely conjured up was, it remained unspoken.  Thanks to The Awl, I discovered a post on wwd.com where six photography editors and designers took the time to write their impressions down to share with us.  Really interesting.
