Still fishin'....

Forgot to hang the "Gone Fishin'" sign before we left for our holiday car-trip to the west and east coasts of Florida. We've done the west, and now we're doing the east. New Year's will find us heading back north...to the winter we left already in progress.

And a new job!

It's adorable watching Rick Perry say hateful things about gays in the military like he's still a real live candidate.

Harry Morgan has died.

Although he had a long and varied career in entertainment, I will always know him best as Col. Sherman T. Potter on M*A*S*H.

In his honor, I share the following:

Thank you for all the rib-tickling and wonderful acting, Mr. Morgan.

My Trans-Siberian Trip: A Prologue

I've long threatened to write more about my epic trip on the Trans-Siberian Express -- a journey I took across the then Soviet Union from my junior-year homebase in Munich to visit my college friend studying that year in Beijing.

I still plan to.

For now, however, I offer the thoughts and observations of a present-day traveler -- in the form of an NPR Moscow correspondent -- in an effort to whet the taste (and buy some time).

Click here for "Russia By Rail".

Changing the idea of what shd be illegal is perfectly legit. When rich ppl do it, it's "lobbying." When poor ppl do it, it's "rioting."

A Gilbert & Sullivan Anthem for Occupy Wall Street

(...from The Pirates of Penzance.)

Pirate King
Oh, better far to live and die
Under the brave black flag I fly,
Than play a sanctimonious part,
With a pirate head and a pirate heart.
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where pirates all are well-to-do;
But I’ll be true to the song I sing,
And live and die a Pirate King.
For I am a Pirate King!
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Pirate King!
For I am a Pirate King!

Chorus
You are!
Hurrah for our Pirate King!

Pirate King
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Pirate King.

Chorus
It is!
Hurrah for our Pirate King!

King & Chorus
Hurrah for the/our Pirate King!

Pirate King
When I sally forth to seek my prey
I help myself in a royal way.
I sink a few more ships, it’s true,
Than a well-bred monarch ought to do;
But many a king on a first-class throne,
If he wants to call his crown his own,
Must manage somehow to get through
More dirty work than ever I do,
For I am a Pirate King!
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Pirate King!
For I am a Pirate King!

Chorus
You are!
Hurrah for the Pirate King!

Pirate King
And it is, it is a glorious thing
To be a Pirate King.

Chorus
It is!
Hurrah for our Pirate King!

King & Chorus
Hurrah for the/our Pirate King!

Awesomest Image du Jour CLXVIII

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and (long house-arrested, pro-democracy) Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi meeting in Rangoon -- the first time a U.S. Secretary of State has been in the country in 50 years.

What a nice way to begin a new month!
